例:

2. Now that a tunnel has been built through the mountains, the Pass...

now (that) conj. 既然(它引导的句子中提到的是一种新情况，一般放在前面，且不能用于回答why 开头的问句）。例:

Now that you mention it, I do remember that accident.

Now that you’ve passed your test, you can drive on your own.

联想：

because 所引导的原因可放前可放后，并且可用于回答why 开头的问句。

as 可表“由于”，所引导的原因常放前,偶而也放后面，不能用于回答why 开头的问句。

since 可表“既然”，所引导的原因一般是一种显而易见的情况，常放在前面，且不能用于回答why 开头的问句。

for 可表“因为”，所引导的原因一般是一种补充说明，常放后面，且不能用于回答why 开头的问句。

例：

Since no one has read this book, we can't discuss it.

As it is raining, we won’t go to the park.

He doesn’t know about it, for he didn’t see the film.

A: Why are you absent from the meeting? B: Because l am ill.

3. Despite the new tunnel, there are still a few people who rashly attempt to cross the Pass on foot.

1) rashly adv. 轻率地

rash adj. 未仔细考虑后果的; 轻率的

例:

It was rash of you to sign the contract without reading it.

Don't make rash promises.

2) attempt to do sth.

努力去做某事

例:

The prisoners attempted to escape, but they failed.

4. The dogs have to be kept in a special enclosure.

enclosure n.围场,圈地

enclose v.围起; 把…… 装入或封入

例:

They are enclosing the garden with a wall.

4. The monks prefer winter to summer for they have more privacy.
